Description

    FOSSIL FISH ASPIRATION
    Capros radobojanus
    Oligocene
    Carpathian Basin
    Poland
    1.62 x 1.3 x 0.12 inches (4.13 x 3.32 x 0.31 cm)

In terms of phenomena captured in the fossil record, an aspiration - an instance of one creature choking to death while in the process of eating another - is a rare occurrence indeed. This very rare behavior has been preserved with predatory fish of the famed Green River Formation in Wyoming but is certainly not common. This incredible example features a Capros radobojanus, also known as a "Boar Fish," eating or, rather, trying to eat, its last meal. This specimen is unique for numerous reasons - this piece is extremely small with the large fish measuring only slightly over 1 inch (2.54 cm) in length, the specimen is a quality example of a rarely seen fish (whose Genus is still alive today!) from the Carpathian Basin of Poland, and the fossil features exceptional preservation with simply amazing detail of the players in this death scene.
