DescriptionFINE MESSEL GARFISH
The Messel Pit, Messel, Germany
The Messel Pit is an UNESCO World Heritage site located outside the town of Messel, Germany; it is the source of many well preserved fossils that provide valuable insight into the Eocene. Fossils from the site are often preserved complete, with fine details such as scales, fur, feathers, and full stomach contents. The present specimen is a extremely well preserved garfish that has been professionally prepared via the "transfer technique" in amber-colored resin; the gar bears remarkable detail including minute diamond-shaped scales, fine fins, and a skull with teeth. The gar measures 7 3/8 x 1 3/8 inches on the translucent resin measuring 10 ¼ x 4 inches.
