Scyliorhinus sp.
    Aioula, Lebanon

The abundant cretaceous fossil beds of Lebanon are second only to the famed Green River formation in producing such a fine diversity of fossil fish. Most are relatively modest in size, but occasionally one comes across a superb example such as the shark fossil offered here. The few examples of this species, relatives of today's cat shark, have been placed in the living genus Scyliorrhinus, giving it a remarkable longevity of 90 million years, but so few have been unearthed that sufficient research to clarify the matter has been impossible. The cartilaginous skeleton of the shark makes it particularly rare in the fossil record; its only chance for preservation was to be covered by silt almost immediately following death, before the cartilage along with the soft tissue had a chance to decay. The present example boasts a fine well-defined outline, highlighted by the preserved spine that stretches the length of the body, alternating positive and negative impressions. The overall effect is striking - few silhouettes are as immediately recognizable as that of the shark, and this fine and rare example represents a most desirable addition to any collection. The fish itself measures 38 inches in length, and rests on a 53 x 26-inch matrix.

    Estimate: $16,000 - $20,000.
