The Lyme Regis region in Dorset, England is another famous locality for producing exceptional fossil specimens. This complex plate consists of numerous complete and partial fossil starfish in a massive mortality scene preserved in layers of highly textural material. The "brittle stars" exhibit highly fluid 'arms' with detailed segmentation and an attractive saffron coloration. The pattern on the rock slab resembles a work of contemporary art, while the piece certainly has scientific value, in terms of the amount of information provided by so many ancient marine creatures having perished a single time.
