Description

Fossil Starfish Plate
Urasterella asperula
Lower Devonian
Hunsrück Slate
Bundenbach, Germany

Out of the world-renowned Bundenbach locality in Germany, this sedimentary plate features multiple examples of well-preserved starfish fossils. One large and fanned-out specimen of Urasterella takes an apex position in this prehistoric diorama flanked by numerous other starfish in various states of motion, including looking as though the creatures are still swimming in some ancient ocean. All arms of each stellate organism radiate out from a central core and are finely detailed with distinctive segments. Dating back some 400 million years ago, the amazing representations do not appear too much different from starfish alive today. The texture of these marine echinoderms provides contrast against the equally black background which has a muted tone. The angular offset rock offers a nice matrix for these starfish.
Overall Measurements: 9.84 x 6.22 x 0.37 inches (25.00 x 15.80 x 0.93 cm)
