Description
Fossil StarfishOphiura graysonensis
Cretaceous
Del Rio Formation, Washita Group
McLennan County, Texas, USA
4.67 x 3.46 x 0.52 inches (11.87 x 8.80 x 1.32 cm)
This well-defined specimen of Ophiura graysonensis from the Cretaceous Del Rio Formation in McLennan County, Texas, beautifully preserves the delicate form of a fossil "Brittlestar." Its fine, jointed arms radiate gracefully from the central disc, each segment retaining exceptional clarity within the pale limestone matrix. Fossil ophiuroids are highly sought for their rarity and fragility, as their slender limbs seldom survive the fossilization process intact. This example captures a quiet moment from an ancient seabed, where movement once traced the soft ocean floor. A finely preserved and visually balanced piece from one of Texas's classic marine deposits.
