Description
Fossil Crinoid Mortality PlateElegantocrinus hemisphaericus & Macrocrinus mundulus
Mississippian
Edwardsville Formation
Montgomery County, Indiana, USA
This classic Fossil Crinoid plate from the renowned Edwardsville Formation of Crawfordsville, Indiana features a diverse assemblage including Elegantocrinus hemisphaericus and Macrocrinus mundulus, taxa long celebrated among collectors and researchers alike. Crawfordsville material dating to the Mississippian has historically set the standard for crinoid preservation in North America, and plates featuring multiple species in association are increasingly uncommon on the market. The blocky gray matrix supports numerous well-preserved, intricately prepared crowns and twisted stalks, displayed in high relief, with some individuals rising from higher portions of the uneven rock surface to create striking visual depth. Although the crowns show abundant impact effects consistent with both life effects and ancient burial prior to extraction, the preparation reveals superb structural details on all the specimens. Substantial in both weight and scientific value, this thick and impressively populated slab represents a compelling snapshot of echinoderm diversity and remains a cornerstone specimen from one of America's most storied fossil localities.
Overall Measurements: 11.02 x 9.25 x 2.36 inches (28.00 x 23.50 x 6.00 cm)
