Description
Fossil Crinoid ColonySeirocrinus subangularis
Jurassic
Posidonienschiefer Formation
Holzmaden, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Among the largest naturally occurring Crinoid colonies ever to appear outside a museum collection, this exquisite assemblage presents a breathtaking tableau of superbly preserved sea lilies, artfully embedded within a rich gray-black stone matrix. Of all the extraordinary fossils discovered at the renowned Holzmaden locality of southern Germany, few rival the ethereal beauty of Crinoids. Though plant-like in appearance, these graceful creatures were, in fact, animals that thrived in the warm, shallow seas of the Jurassic Period. As passive filter-feeders, they anchored themselves to drifting wood (as dramatically preserved in the present specimen), extending their delicate calyxes-the blossom-like crowns of their bodies-to capture nutrients suspended in the water. This exceptional specimen comprises two panels, which can be conjoined, each showcasing an intricate array of fossils dating back nearly 180 million years. Together, they form a natural masterpiece-an artwork shaped by time itself and a testament to the enduring elegance of life preserved in stone.
Single Panel Overall Measurements: 100.00 x 63.00 x 2.00 inches (254.00 x 160.02 x 5.08 cm)
Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern California Collector
