Description
Triceratops Brow HornTriceratops horridus
Late Cretaceous
Hell Creek Formation, Montana
Few creatures are as iconic as the Triceratops, and it is unquestionably the three horns which give the ancient beast its name and that make it such a universally recognizable variety of Dinosaur. This great example of a Brow Horn from the extinct ceratopsian is quite solid and very complete. This piece does not exhibit the large amounts of repair and restoration so common with fossils of this type. The brown horn core has a rugged texture and the characteristic curvature is prominent on this specimen. A notch near the tip may be considered an imperfection, but it really only serves to give personality to this one. The hollow interior cavity is deep but does not seem to affect the structural integrity of the rather well-preserved fossil. At just one inch under two feet at the maximum length, this piece is noteworthy both for quality and for size. This specimen is natural and rustic seeming like it just came out of the ground. The "three-horned face" Dinosaur may have used its horns for defense, but more recent theory states the horns were more likely for identification and for displays of dominance and possibly for courtship.
