Description

Spinosaurid Dinosaur Claw
Suchomimus tenerensis
Cretaceous
Erlhaz Formation
Téneré Desert, Gadoufaoua, Niger

Dinosaur claws are much more uncommon than teeth - which makes sense - since there are many fewer claws than teeth on the great "terrible lizards" that dominated the terrestrial ecosystem of the Cretaceous Period. This monstrous all-natural specimen with no restoration is huge, measuring an enormous 6.4 inches (16.3 cm). The unrestored fossil is lacking the end of the tip but is, otherwise, virtually complete and incredibly solid. A dark, brownish-black coloration covers the exterior of the ominous killing digit, which also features some patches of orangey-brown accents. The prominent curvature of the claw is visually captivating, and two matching, curved blood grooves are visible on each of the two sides of the core. Representing a spinosaurid variety, this Suchomimus appendage is beyond impactful. This is as realistic as any movie prop - yet it is the real thing! Just holding such a surreal piece of paleontological history is awe-inspiring, and this fossil, with major dimensionality to the girthy, colossal, and sinister form is something special, indeed, and a rarity beyond question. Museum-quality is not an overstatement when discussing this fossil from the desert of West Africa.
Measurements: 6.42 x 2.57 x 2.05 inches (16.30 x 6.52 x 5.20 cm)
