This large fossilized bone is solid, heavy, and important, because it represents the vertebra of a colossal Dinosaur known as Camarasaurus. The most prolific Sauropod found in the Jurassic rocks of the famous Morrison Formation, this example from Utah is a proximal caudal vertebra featuring classic gray-brown color over its rocky surface. The form is readily identifiable with even some remnant processes partially preserved. The giant, herbivorous, plant-eating variety was monstrous in size, and this complete "vert" is supplemented by a "bone map" showing where it 'fit' within the skeleton of this enormous Dinosaur. Weighing 33 pounds (15 kilograms), the heavily mineralized vertebra is duly impressive. The top surface of the fossil displays several natural indentations which are hard to identify but definitely very intriguing.
