Description
Hadrosaurid Dinosaur Ilium BoneEdmontosaurus sp.
Cretaceous
North America
This large hadrosaurid ilium, attributable to Edmontosaurus, dates to the Late Cretaceous and represents the upper pelvic element of one of North America's most abundant herbivorous dinosaurs. Measuring approximately 33 inches (84 cm) in length and weighing 10 kilograms (22 pounds), the bone reflects the robust proportions expected of an adult individual, consistent with animals that could attain lengths of 25 to 35 feet (7.6 to 10.7 meters). The ilium exhibits the broad, gently arched blade and elongated posterior process characteristic of hadrosaurids, features that served as critical attachment sites for the powerful hind-limb musculature required for locomotion in these large-bodied ornithischians.
Preserved in excellent condition, the specimen displays a consistent brownish coloration with well-defined cortical surfaces and minimal distortion, allowing for clear appreciation of its natural morphology. The overall completeness of the element is notable, as large pelvic bones are far less commonly encountered intact than more frequently recovered skeletal components such as vertebrae or ribs. As a diagnostic and visually striking example of hadrosaur pelvic anatomy, this specimen offers both scientific and display value, illustrating the scale and functional anatomy of one of the dominant herbivores of the Late Cretaceous.
Measurements: 33.07 x 11.02 x 3.15 inches (84.00 x 28.00 x 8.00 cm)
