Description

Diplodocus Dinosaur Caudal Vertebra
Diplodocus sp.
Late Jurassic
Morrison Formation
Big Horn Basin, Wyoming, USA

While this dinosaur vertebra is obviously quite large, the bone actually came out of the tail section of a massive Sauropod known as Diplodocus. Collected in the summer of 1999 by Bob Simon, this monstrous example, complete with processes, is visually impactful. From the popular quadrupedal long-necked dinosaur with an elongated tail, the bony form is slightly compressed but retains a shape unmistakably a vertebra. The chocolate brown specimen boasts an 'hourglass' structure. The spinous process extends prominently from the core of the bone, adding a major secondary aspect to the big and bold fossil. The remnant out of the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming, dating to the Late Jurassic, has a relatively minimal amount of visible restoration and crack fill repairs. The exterior features a decent covering of a somewhat smooth "crust," opposed to other exposed patches where the granular and rugged interior is revealed. This is a fine, rather rustic dinosaur vertebra with excellent preservation and outstanding, recognizable form. This is a good-sized bone from a very large variety of dinosaur.
