Description

Dinosaur Trackway
Anchisauripus
Early Jurassic
Portland Formation
South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA

This positive-negative matched pair of Dinosaur Footprints was made by a mid-sized, bipedal theropod similar to the early theropod Coelophysis. Such tracks were initially discovered in the Connecticut River Valley of Connecticut as well as Massachusetts in the early 1800s, although they were not identified as Dinosaurs until decades later. This example belonged to a Grallator-like variety known as Anchisauripus, an "ichnogenus" meaning the kind is only known by footprints and no other types of fossilized remains have been discovered for the genus. The region had a very different climate during the Mesozoic, with a dry climate punctuated by a brief monsoon season. The areas would flood, and Dinosaurs would make tracks when the water receded. The sediment would then dry out and harden thus beginning a process of fossilization. This pair has been enhanced to showcase the brown tracks against the similarly colored rock. This excellent specimen with evidence of claws is presented in two custom black metal armatures.
