Description

Dinosaur Egg
Megaloolithus sp.
Late Cretaceous: Campanian/ Maaestrichian, Begudo-Rognacian Formation
Méze, Hérault, Languedoc, France

First described in the 1840s, these were the first Dinosaur eggs to be studied, but they were thought to be the eggs of a giant crocodile at the time. It wasn't until 1869 that they were formally ascribed to a Dinosaur that was named Hypselosaurus. This single egg was found on private land and is accompanied by a document from the landowner attesting to that fact. Thus it is a Dinosaur egg that can be legally owned by private individuals, unlike most of the other Dinosaur eggs in the world. It is consistent with others found in the vicinity - all tend to be composed of broken shell fragments in rough apposition embedded in a weakly consolidated, sedimentary matrix. Shell definition is good to excellent with even minute surface features visible on the exterior surfaces. Originally spherical, all of the eggs recovered tend to be flattened to some degree and this one is no different.
Overall Measurements: 13.0 x 16.1 x 5.5 inches (33 x 41 x 14 cm)
Offered at no reserve.
