An exquisite example of precious gem ammolite; the shell of this ammonite has been transformed over millions of years from plain mother-of-pearl to the wonderfully colorful iridescent material we see today. This process is observed only in specimens from a small area of North America, making them among the most sought-after by fossil collectors. Most are subjected to intense compression, many emerging almost completely flat, but the present example retains much of its three-dimensionality. The specimen flashes with brilliant swaths of red, greens, and yellows. This fine robust specimen measures 8 ½ x 7 x 2 inches.
