Description
Pyritized Ammonite FossilQuenstedtoceras sp.
Jurassic
Volga River, Ulyanovsk, Russia
1.65 x 1.34 x 0.37 inches (4.20 x 3.40 x 0.95 cm)
The metallic appearance of this sliced Ammonite, indicative of the mineral Pyrite being the primary agent of its fossilization, may be the most significant aspect of this offering, but the piece has many other quite considerable attributes. The solid example has a pronounced exterior texture with a graduated "ribbing" to the well-preserved nacre, which also features a subtle iridescence. The dark and "exposed" inner section of the outside results in a 'shell within a shell' and provides a substantial contrast with dark gray metallic color against the whitish-pinkish hue that covers much of its surface. Of course, its cut and polished side is replete with hollow chambers partially filled with grainy and shiny "Fool's Gold" throughout. The fossil measures 1.65 inches (4.20 cm) in diameter and dates to the Early Cretaceous from the Volga River in Russia.
