Description
GEM AMMONITE
Iridescent "Gem" AmmonitePlacenticeras meeki
Late Cretaceous, Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada
Ammonites are a very common fossil. Collectible Ammonites, especially those that have been well-preserved with good colors, are very uncommon. This particular type of gem ammonite is essentially only found in a single location. It exhibits the incredible phenomenon of having preserved nacre that results in rainbow iridescence you see here. Even if this Ammonite were just a one trick pony, it would be one great trick! When it comes to coloration, which is the major distinguishing feature of the iridescent, "gem" Ammonites, this is as good as it gets. This incredible example showcases an intensity of colors not typically seen. This "gem" Ammonite is unabashedly a stunner. The upper section of the feature side is primarily a opalescent purple - a rather uncommon color for these Ammonites, especially for the primary hue on the surface - with a smattering of electric green. The reverse side is similar in its color palette with some pronounced areas of gold near the periphery. The specimen is relatively thin and incurred some compression to the shell. There is a raised and irregular area protruding out from the whorl on both surfaces, and the colors, though present, are not as prevalent over a very thin section of shell, which is atypical to the rest of the Ammonite. This "gemmy" Ammonite is lightweight for its size, as a result of its thin nature, and the surface area to color ratio is exceptional: since the piece is so colorful on both sides. Measuring a substantial 21 inches (53.3 cm) at its widest point, this is a very large specimen. The brilliant colors leap off the fossilized shell. Given that this Ammolite material is considered a gemstone, it should be no surprise that this Ammonite is as strikingly beautiful as it is scientifically interesting. This intense specimen includes a custom folding metal stand and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. This is an impactful piece.
Overall Measurements: 21.0 x 16.9 x 0.8 inches (53.3 x 43.0 x 2.1 cm)
