    Description

    HUGE MOUNTED AMMONITE
    Kranosphinctes sp.
    Upper Jurassic, Oxfordian
    Sakahara, Tulear, Madagascar

It is clear from the fossil record that the fortunes of various animal and plant groups change over time. As proof of that fact, we are currently enmeshed in a heated debate over "climate change" and the consequences of that change for the ecology of Earth. The concept that the environment was different in eons past can be taken as a given. Not only was the environment different, the animals and plants that were most suited for those conditions also differ dramatically compared to today. Certain groups flourished, others languished or died out. The Mesozoic can be seen as a beautiful example of that situation, with the extreme prevalence and diversity of cephalopods residing in the seas during that period. Of the cephalopods, the Ammonites and their kin are probably the most iconic group of the period. Every schoolchild over the age of 8 knows something about this fossil group. The range of sizes and shapes were and are bewildering, as any cursory study of this group will show. One of the more striking members of this group comes from the genus Kranosphinctes, of which a prime example from Madagascar is offered here. Virtually all Kranosphinctes fossils offered on the market are small specimens no more than 4 inches (10 cm) across. The giant one seen here measures an enormous 17.5 inches (44.45 cm) across, and it is massive enough to require two people to move. To facilitate display, it has been mounted on a custom metal base that allows it to be rotated easily with one hand. For something that is 160 million years old, it is in remarkably superb condition, with the original white shell material still in place. As a stark, almost alien reminder that - things change; there are few objects that demonstrate this fact as directly as this one does.
    Overall Measurements: 17.5 x 11.75 x 27.5 inches (41 x 30 x 70 cm)
