Description
Fossil CrabHarpactocarcinus quadriobatus
Eocene
Monte Baldo, Italy
This well-preserved specimen of Harpactocarcinus quadriobatus offers a vivid glimpse into marine life of the Early Eocene, approximately 50 million years ago. The fossil displays a remarkably intact carapace and finely articulated claws-distinct features that evoke its once-active life along ancient coastal rock formations. Likely a predator or scavenger, this decapod crustacean would have used its powerful claws for seizing prey and navigating the rocky seafloor. Part of the diverse order Decapoda-which includes crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, and prawns-this species is a testament to the evolutionary longevity and ecological success of ten-footed crustaceans. The specimen is presented in an elegant wood and acrylic display case, suitable for both scientific and aesthetic appreciation.
Crab Measurements: 6.00 x 5.50 x 4.00 inches (15.24 x 13.97 x 10.16 cm)
