Description

FINE UNCOILED AMMONITE
Audouliceras matherioanum
Aptian - Early Cretaceous
Volga River, Saratov, Russia

Ammonite diversification during the Early Cretaceous resulted in many odd forms of ammonites; some species, like the present one, started off with loosely coiled shells and then formed straighter shells in maturity. This present uncoiled ammonite was meticulously prepared out of a hard limestone nodule and all the details are finely preserved; fine coils and ribbing mark the immature side of the ammonite while thick loops and defensive spikes mark the mature side. A glossy purple iridescence from mother-of-pearl covers part of the ammonite, resulting in a regal glow from this fine specimen. This rare ammonite measures 7 x 5 x 1 ¾ inches on the nodular matrix measuring 7 x 6 x 2 inches.
