    Placenticeras meeki
    Late Cretaceous
    Bearpaw Formation
    Alberta, Canada

The noteworthy Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada as the only locality for the much coveted ammonites with "gem" ammolite in the world. Ammonites are already iconic as a fossil group, and specimens from this locality are some of the most beautiful and collectible in the entire world. These fossils of the invertebrate marine creatures that went extict at the same time as the dinosaurs, are so sought after, they are considered National Treasues of Canada - although they are now commecially mined and exported to collections throughout the world. Extremely large for a freestone specimen out of matix, this spectacular "gem" ammonite is truly a centerpiece. The highly prized red color is prevalent all over this specimen which is magnificent in its both size and quality. Exceptionally inflated - which is not common in larger pieces - this collectible yet decorative specimen can be the focus of an entire room's decor as evidenced by the wall mount bracketing that accompanies this fossil. If size is a factor, this piece has it! There are "patchwork" areas on the ammonite that add to its character and only serve to enhance its three-dimensional appeal. With the ammolite preservation across the entire shell, this huge fossil is ironically all gemstone. The bright red "effect" in proper lighting is certainly the key here, but the immense size of this piece in addition to its fine quality makes this truly worthy of any museum.
    Measurements: 24 x 21 x 4.5 inches (60.96 x 53.34 x 11.43 cm)..
