Description

EXCEPTIONAL AMMONITE
Placenticeras meeki
Late Cretaceous
Near Hell Creek Formation, South Dakota

Ammonites were highly successful life form - they were distributed throughout the oceans of the world until all varieties went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period along with Dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Ammonites are a tremendous index fossil whereby it is often possible to link a specific Geologic Time Period to the rock layer in which the Ammonite was found. They typically feature a coiled shape and often feature whorls of complete spiral revolution in their growth pattern. This classic specimen demonstrates the beautiful patterning of sutures so exquisitely characteristic of Placenticeras sp. - there is stunning Calcite replacement that results in areas of golden yellow that contrast starkly with the dark chocolate brown suture lines. The polished Ammonite is in very good condition with only minor indications of stabilization and repair. This specimen was collected in 1976 near the famous Hell Creek Formation, known for Dinosaur fossils. It measures 6.5 x 5 inches (16.51 x 12.7 cm).Offered at no reserve.
Provenance: Private Texas Collection, Self Collected in 1976

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
