DescriptionAMMONITE WITH IRIDESCENCE
Fox Hills Formation, Cheyenne River, South Dakota
Many fossils in the Fox Hills Formation of South Dakota are preserved in hard carbonaceous nodules; these nodules are very difficult to crack, but if done so properly, they can reveal marvelous fossils such as the present ammonite. This ammonite displays beautiful mother-of-pearl with rainbow iridescence and is still partially encased in its original nodule. The ammonite measures 2 ¾ inches across and the nodule matrix measures 7 x 4 ½ x 4 inches and sits attractively on a display stand.
