Description
Ammonite Fossil on Metal BasePachydiscus catarinae
Cretaceous
Baja California, Mexico
A superb and visually striking specimen, this beautifully polished Ammonite fossil reveals the intricate suture patterns that are diagnostic of the species-complex, leaf-like structures marking the junctions of the internal shell chambers, formed as the ancient coiled cephalopod grew throughout its life. Both sides of the fossil have been expertly cut and polished, creating a surface of exceptional smoothness and luster that highlights the rhythmic geometry of the shell. The specimen displays a rich natural palette of warm cream, dark gray, and chocolate brown tones, their interplay lending the piece remarkable depth and warmth. Mounted on a custom steel stand, this impressive ammonite achieves the perfect balance between scientific significance and aesthetic presence. A magnificent example of nature's artistry-a timeless fossil form transformed into a work of natural sculpture, equally suited for fine interior display or advanced natural history collections-this superlative Pachydiscus represents a variety not often seen for sale or at auction. This is a top example of the variety, and there is only a single patch of "fill" on the back of the fossil.
