    Description

    Ammolite Specimen
    Placenticeras sp.
    Cretaceous
    Bearpaw Formation
    Alberta, Canada

The amazingly, colorful material, from uniquely preserved shells of Ammonites, from southern Alberta, Canada is called Ammolite and is considered both fossil and gemstone. Even just small specimens have quite a following as the fossil variety is universally popular. This example is obviously incredibly vibrant but also rather large measuring nearly 11 inches (28 cm) across its rainbow hued surface. This example offers vivid patches of the less common and coveted purple and blue colors, while plenty of green and gold highlights round out the myriad of brilliance so strongly exhibited by this exceptional specimen of natural "stained glass" dating back to the Cretaceous, when Dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The bottom features a semi-circular patch lacking color that may have been part of the original whorl of the shell. The coverage of color is nearly complete over this bright slab with only tiny areas of "muddy" brown.
    Overall Measurements: 10.47 x 6.06 x 1.50 inches (26.60 x 15.40 x 3.80 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
