Description

Ammolite Fossil
Placenticeras sp.
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada

The aptly named "Gem" Ammonites which come out of the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada, have shells that are uniquely fossilized into material known as Ammolite, which is considered both a fossil and gemstone, being designated as the latter by the World Jewellery Confederation in 1981, the year it began to be commercially mined. Pieces are universally popular for vivid colors and hues like this truly phenomenal 'hand specimen' that boasts an abundance of green and rare purple over the slick polished and sealed surface. Measuring 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in length, this wedge-shaped offering can rest securely without a base on its flat channel bottom. The underneath edge lacks any color, but the vibrant Ammolite does wrap around part of the secondary side of this piece featuring mostly purple over the partial coverage. Color is king with such material, and this is extremely bold.
Measurements: 6.69 x 3.29 x 2.29 inches (17.00 x 8.35 x 5.82 cm)
