Description
Ammolite FossilPlacenticeras sp.
Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada
This sizable and stunning fossil is a section of colorful shell from an Ammonite that lived during the Cretaceous. With a unique fossilization, limited to a single locality of the Bearpaw Formation in the province of Alberta, in Canada, such material - known as Ammolite - is both a fossil and gemstone, having been classified as the latter by the World Jewellery Confederation, since 1981. Either of the two sides could be considered the primary from a display standpoint; this chunk of Ammolite from the singular location offers superlative hue over both faces. Measuring over 11 inches (28 cm) wide across its broad and thick form, the primary display side chosen here includes vibrant green, gold, and yellow with a few hints of rare blue and purple. The reverse side is nearly equally impressive, with only one missing patch detracting at all from such a vivid surface. This side features red, green, gold, purple, and even uncommon blue tones. A two-sided wonder, this piece is extremely dense and thick, evidenced by its weight of just over 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds). This is one highly decorative example that has been prepared and coated after being mined for stability and longevity of its visual display.
Measurements: 11.22 x 7.09 x 1.77 inches (28.50 x 18.00 x 4.49 cm)
