Description
Ammolite FossilPlacenticeras sp.
Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada
3.84 x 2.49 x 0.46 inches (9.75 x 6.32 x 1.17 cm)
Only a handful of biogenic materials are recognized as gemstones, and Ammolite is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. This popular material, also considered a fossil, is exclusively found in the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada, in fossilized Ammonite shells. This specific example is on the smaller side at under 4 inches (9.75 cm), but still shines with a range of green, blue, and purple flashes as well as hints of the highly desirable blue and purple hues. The texture is indicative of the coveted "dragon's skin" patterning.
Estimate: $300 - up.
