Description

"Gem" Ammonite
Placenticeras meeki
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
St. Mary's River, Alberta, Canada

Color is often king when it comes to minerals, but it can be the case with select fossils as well. This truly spectacular "Gem" Ammonite from the Bearpaw Formation of Alberta, Canada is a symphony of colors. The large, freestone specimen is amazing on both sides and is quite inflated, especially near the middle, which is not common with these fossils that are typically rather compressed due to natural forces. As this variety of specimen goes, this piece is superlative. Of particular note, this shell features prominent sections of both the highly coveted colors of purple and blue which tend to be less common and prized amongst collectors. The unique preservation of the original shell has resulted in the existence of Ammolite, which is both a fossil and a gemstone. The intense, electric nature of the colors is hard to put into words, and this very sizable specimen at over 15 inches (38 cm) in maximum diameter is, simply put, a statement piece. The specimen comes with a sleek and adjustable labeled black metal stand and a Certificate of Authenticity.
Overall Measurements: 15.16 x 12.68 x 2.76 inches (38.50 x 32.20 x 7.00 cm)
