    "Gem" Ammonite in Matrix
    Placenticeras costatum
    Late Cretaceous
    Bearpaw Formation
    Alberta, Canada

"Gem" Ammonites are some of the most beautiful of all invertebrates, and for that matter vertebrates, fossils often feature a myriad of colorful hues and exhibit naturally artistic form. Examples found with matrix are prized among collectors for the context in which the fossil is presented, as well as the dramatic contrast of the black rock against the vibrant fossil. When an Ammonite shell fossilizes with such iridescent characteristics, it is known as Ammolite, which is technically both fossil and gemstone. Originating exclusively in southern Alberta, Canada, the fossils are inherently rare, with top examples commanding lots of attention. This fine specimen features a fossil with predominantly reds and golds along with a colorful section of greens, purples and blues near its outermost chamber. The vivid shell measures 8 inches (20 cm) at maximum diameter and presents beautifully in the center of the matrix.
This phenomenal specimen has been fitted with a metal cleat system for secure wall installation and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. As "national treasures" of Canada, each specimen is numbered. This "Gem" Ammonite in matrix exudes decorative appeal and would be an impact piece in any room.
    Overall Measurements: 23.00 x 14.50 x 4.50 inches (58.42 x 36.83 x 11.43 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
