Description

"Gem" Ammonite in Matrix
Placenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada

Collected in the Winter of 2022, this truly spectacular, mined Ammonite dates to the Cretaceous some 71 million years ago and exhibits superb iridescence. A wonderful matrix specimen, this is a top representation of the Placenticeras costatum variety, which accounts for less than 10 percent of the Ammonites found in the singular locality. The Bearpaw Formation has produced this clearly "gemmy" fossil which is also a gemstone consisting of unique material known as Ammolite which has been classified as such by the World Jewellery Confederation since 1981. The sizable piece by weight at 24 kilograms (52.8 pounds) is actually a rather delightful overall size, offering dimensions of more manageable proportions than other matrix pieces which can be extremely unwieldy to both handle and install. This glorious "Gem" Ammonite boasts superb color and an incredible matrix in both size and shape. The vibrant fossil measures 10 inches (25 cm) at maximum diameter and is visually stunning with a myriad of vivid colors and some raised areas, making it a highly dimensional example of the rare species. Simply brilliant, this piece is a true natural work of art exhibiting colors including reds, oranges, golds, and greens, as well as the rarer purples and blues. This fossil has a functional metal cleat system for a safe and secure installation. This is a magnificent representation of the Canadian "national treasure" that is confirmed by specimen number 2(1397) and, of course, by just viewing it in person. The potential decorative impact of this piece cannot be overstated, and this really is just about as beautiful as it gets for this top variety. This is one intense collectible item.
Overall Measurements: 22.05 x 16.54 x 3.54 inches (56.00 x 42.00 x 9.00 cm)
