Description

"Gem" Ammonite in Matrix
Placenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada

Matrix specimens, especially when they are colorful "Gem" Ammonites in contrasting black matrix, are highly coveted for obvious reasons. Measuring 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter, the Ammonite exhibits a myriad of vibrant colors and hues including green, gold, red, blue and purple. The compressed example has some inflation towards the wider part of the preserved shell that gives added dimensionality to the beautiful example of Ammolite which is both fossil and gemstone. The stunner is a little misshapen due to the effects of the fossilization process within the layers of shale in which it preserved, but color is not lacking in this phenomenal offering that is equally, supremely decorative and certainly highly collectible. Complete with French cleating system for secure wall installation, the colorful association of fossil with matrix is designed as a display piece. The decorative impact of such a fossil as the focal point in a room cannot be overstated. The fabulous matrix specimen is from the famous Bearpaw Formation of Canada. The overall background rock is rather large measuring 39 inches (99 cm) tall and 30 inches (76 cm) wide.
Overall Measurements: 39.00 x 30.00 x 4.50 inches (99.06 x 76.20 x 11.43 cm)
