Description

"Gem" Ammonite in Matrix
Placenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada

Considered in the top five percent of all the specimens from the locality, this truly spectacular "Gem" Ammonite in Matrix is as good as they get. The brilliant, rainbow colored fossil explodes with intense shades of red, green and gold, as well as highlights of rarer blue and purple hues when lit up properly. The colorful ancient shell measures over 17 inches (43 cm) in diameter and displays central placement on an irregular-edged matrix of contrasting black matrix. This Ammonite exhibits exceptional form and bright colors throughout. The overall piece features excellent iridescence which is due to the Ammolite in the now fossilized seashell that is both fossil and gemstone. Ammolite is rare and beautiful, as well as a biogenic gemstone like Pearl and Amber. This type of preservation is some of the most incredible seen.

The species of this Placenticeras Ammonite is costatum which may explain why the fossil is much more "inflated" than is often the case with other specimens which are usually compressed between layers of shale. The naturally sculptural shell comes off the rock with most of the piece standing in dramatic relief against the dark background. The dimensionality of the fossil further enhances its elegant appeal.

This massive specimen weighs 115.5 pounds (62.5 kg) and has been fitted with a metal cleat system for wall mounting. This would, undoubtedly, be a statement piece in any environment. A bona fide natural work of art, this outstanding museum-quality specimen is visually striking on a very substantial level. This is a simply amazing "wow" piece which could be a real "game changer" for any room, décor or environment. The superlative example comes with a detailed Certificate of Authenticity.
Overall Measurements: 37.01 x 31.10 x 6.00 inches (94.00 x 79.00 x 15.24 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
