Description

"Gem" Ammonite Fossil
Placenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada

While the natural "rainbow" of vibrant colors, and wonderfully artistic form, are the most obvious visual characteristics of this incredible "Gem" Ammonite from the Bearpaw Formation of Canada, the relatively expansive dimensions of this prehistoric cephalopod measuring nearly 20 inches (51 cm) at maximum diameter and a sizable 17 inches (43 cm) on the smaller measurement might be the most telling attributes of this superlative specimen. Rather flat, as is common for this variety, this highly decorative paleontological wonder has an enormous surface area for its weight. This stunningly beautiful Placenticeras costatum dating to the Late Cretaceous comes with a custom wooden easel stand and is truly spectacular on both sides. An abundance of rare purple and blue hues dominate the slick, polished surface of the giant preserved shell, with an unmistakable and elegant shape. Effectively only found in a singular locality, this material is highly prized by serious collectors and decorative enthusiasts alike. The unique form of preservation, known as Ammolite, is both fossil and gemstone - recognized as such since 1981 by the World Jewellery Confederation.
Measurements: 19.69 x 16.54 x 1.97 inches (50.00 x 42.00 x 5.00 cm)
