"Gem" Ammonite Fossil
Placenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada

One of the most visually striking specimens in this assortment, this stunning "Gem" Ammonite from the famed Bearpaw Formation of Alberta, Canada, displays a myriad of vibrant colors, including a significant amount of the rarer blue and purple hues. Measuring a substantial 18.5 inches (47 cm) at the maximum diameter, this majestic piece offers excellent iridescence and bright colors over both expansive sides of the wonderfully preserved ancient cephalopod. Collected in the summer of 2014, this superlative fossil represents the Placenticeras costatum variety and dates to the Late Cretaceous, some 70 million years ago. The superlative example of Ammolite, which is both a fossil as well as a gemstone, was mined from the lowest layers of the locality known for producing the best material. The representation has all of the characteristics for which these Canadian national treasures are so coveted. With a good shape as well as areas of both vivid coloration and pronounced ribbing, this Ammonite features a general tapering down toward the edge, and the overall fossil, while somewhat compressed, is considerably inflated in some of the sections of its smooth shell. Weighing just over 8.8 kilograms (19.5 pounds), this offering is an upper echelon level "Gem" Ammonite with infinite decorative potential. This is certain to be an impactful focal point centerpiece for any room or décor where it is presented. It comes with a wooden easel for display.
Measurements: 18.50 x 15.75 x 2.76 inches (47.00 x 40.00 x 7.00 cm)
