Description
"Gem" Ammonite FossilPlacenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada
When Ammonites fossilize in a particular way in the Bearpaw Formation of Alberta, Canada, the result can be a "Gem" Ammonite, as is the case with this colorful specimen dating to the Late Cretaceous. An impressive piece for both size and colors, this prehistoric cephalopod measures over 13 inches (33 cm) at maximum diameter. The "classic" hues of green, gold, and red are prominent over both sides of this example of Placenticeras. The massive ancient shell is a bit compressed near the periphery and shows significant irregular indentations, although not specifically identifiable as mosasaur bite marks. This shell has been through a lot, but the key attribute is that it has intense color over all of the smooth exterior. Presented with a folding, wooden plate-like stand of brown and black, this rustic fossil is big and bright.
Measurements: 13.39 x 6.69 x 2.36 inches (34.00 x 17.00 x 6.00 cm)
