Description

"Gem" Ammonite Fossil
Placenticeras costatum
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada

So-called "Gem" Ammonites are, essentially, only found in a single locality, and the unique preservation of these prehistoric shells results in a material known as Ammolite, which is both fossil and gemstone - having been classified as such by the World Jewellery Confederation since 1981. This truly spectacular example displays incredible colors over its slick surfaces on both sides, including rarer blue hues in addition to more "common" but equally spectacular reds, greens, oranges and golds. Measuring nearly 18 inches (46 cm) at maximum diameter, this is big, decorative and incredible. The Ammonite is a Placenticeras costatum of Late Cretaceous age, out of the acclaimed Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada. Collected in Summer 2015, the mined specimen is from the lowest layers of the deposits where the best gemstone fossils are found. Fully documented and legally exported, this example is destined to be one amazing centerpiece. This representation is accompanied by a custom wooden display easel and a Certificate of Authenticity.
Measurements: 17.71 x 14.96 x 1.96 inches (45.00 x 38.00 x 5.00 cm)
