Description

TAR FOSSIL BIRD BONE
Phasianidae family
Pleistocene
Rancho la Brea Formation, McKittrick Pit, California

Like the famous La Brea Tar Pits; the Mckittrick tar pits southwest of Bakersfield California also trapped many types of fauna during the Pleistocene. Pools of water often formed on top of tar seeps and many types of birds would come down to drink, only to find themselves stuck fast in the underlying tar. This specimen is a member of the Phasianidae family, which represents grouse and prairie chickens; the bone, measuring 2 ¾ inch long, is slender and has a well preserved distal end.
