Description

Fossil Bird
Unknown Species
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA

Avian fossils are a rarity, in the general sense, and Fossil Birds from the Green River Formation, especially complete specimens, are rather uncommon. While unidentified as to its variety, and relatively disarticulated in form, this is, nonetheless, a very rare, fossilized bird out of the iconic and important formation. Dating to the Eocene Epoch and embedded in a mottled block of thick sedimentary matrix featuring hues of tan, taupe, and gray, the rarity presents with relatively dark preservation and finer detail over much of the specimen. Elements of both the skeletal remains and components of the feathers are readily as well as easily identifiable. The Fossil Bird offers a measurement of 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) at maximum length, although what appears to be a head is offset, as is typical with the "death pose" of animals, due to contractions of ligaments in the neck. Such delicate fossils can provide valuable evidence as to the diversity of early birds at that time.
Overall Measurements: 6.30 x 5.39 x 1.13 inches (16.00 x 13.70 x 2.88 cm)
