Description

MUSEUM QUALITY PLATE OF FINELY PREPARED CRINOID FOSSILS FROM FAMOUS LOCALITY
    Crinoids (various genera and species)
    Mississippian
    Edwards Formation
    Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana

Crawfordsville, Indiana, is a world-famous locality for fossil Crinoids. This site dates back to 1842 when nine year old Horace Hovey unearthed the first Crinoid fossil there. In fact, more than 60 species of 40 genera are represented in the deposits which date back to the Mississippian Period of Carboninferous. These marine animals make up a class of echinoderms featuring a calyx, stem and arms. Modern-day Crinoids with stalks that attach to the ocean floor are known as Sea Lilies. This museum quality plate is covered with a myriad of individual Crinoids that have been meticulously prepared by experts using specialized micro-abrasive tooling - this plate represents hundredths of hours of meticulous work. These delicate fossils are beautifully raised against the gray shale matrix of the rock containing them and offer a unique contrast in both color and texture. Over 300 million years ago, this scene played out in the bottom of a warm shallow sea that once covered what is now Indiana. This is a truly amazing assemblage worthy of any collection, as this Crawfordsville classic features parts from more than 30 individual fossilized specimens and measures an impressive 21 x 15 x 2 inches (53.34 x 38.10 x 5.08 cm).
