Fossil "Water Strider"
    Propygolampis bronni
    Upper Jurassic, Solnhofen Limestone
    Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany

This exceptionally well preserved insect is a water-strider from the famous Jurassic Solnhofen deposits in Germany. Here a large faux "walking stick" has been captured in lithographic limestone. Dating back some 150 million years ago, this truly classic locality has produced many famous fossils, most notably Archaeopteryx. Formerly known as Chresmoda obscura, this insect had to be renamed when it was found out a short-horned grasshopper already had the same nomenclature! This fine example is a rarity as it has good preservation of the legs, and not just the body. This taupe-tan little creature is ever so slightly in relief off of the very thin textural yellowish-tan matrix. This "bug" is an impressive invertebrate fossil - in excellent condition and from a major locality.
    Overall Measurements: 7.9 x 7.7 x 0.3 inches (20.2 x 19.5 x 0.6 cm)

    Estimate: $800 - $1,200.
