This distinctive fossil plate features a beautifully preserved Plecia pealei, an ancient species of March Fly from the Eocene aged Green River Formation. Insect fossils from this locality are notably rarer than the formation's abundant fish and plant specimens, making this a particularly desirable example. The delicate wings and slender body are sharply defined against the pale matrix, capturing an exquisite level of anatomical detail seldom seen in such fragile organisms. Often called "love bugs" for their paired flight behavior, these prehistoric flies offer a fleeting glimpse into the subtler side of Eocene life.
