Description
Fossil DragonflyStenophlebia sp.
Upper Jurassic, Solnhofen Limestone
Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany
The world-famous "lithographic" Limestone of the Solnhofen Lagerstätte in Germany is known for producing numerous and amazing top-quality fossils with exceptional preservation. This broad and irregularly shaped rock displays a yellowish hue with some natural staining and sporadic fibers of dendritic mineral. Of course, the treasure here is the complete Fossil Dragonfly with its quartet of wings in an ideal position relative to the slender body. The fossilized insect has a wingspan of 4 inches (10 cm) across and still looks almost as if flying over the rock, rather than preserved in it. A fabulous fossil from an iconic locality, this example of Stenophlebia, dating to the Upper Jurassic, from Bavaria, Germany, is a definite keeper. The sedimentary material features a makeshift metal wire hanging system to allow for easy installation of the fossil on a wall. The back features "9173" as a collection number and handwritten notes with "Stenophlebia, Upper Jurassic, Solnhofen" in pencil among some other illegible writing in cursive. This type of fossil is becoming harder to find.
Overall Measurements: 16.38 x 7.68 x 0.65 inches (41.60 x 19.50 x 1.65 cm)
Provenance: Private Pacific Northwest Collection #9713
