Description
Fossil DragonflyLibellulium longialatum
Upper Jurassic, Solnhofen Limestone
Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany
The fossil dragonfly Libellulium longialatum is recognizable by the large and powerful structure of its wings. Formerly classified as Cymatophlebia, this 150 million year old example is from the very famous limestone deposit in Germany known as Solnhofen, which is renowned for producing fossils of exceptional preservation. This "negative" fossil dragonfly has an orangey hue and is situated on an attractive block of tan and orange limestone, which includes dark orange dendrites in a dense line on one edge of the block. Depending on orientation, the ancient and fossilized dragonfly appears to be "taking off" from the dendritic runway in this Jurassic scene. The overall preservation on this piece is outstanding with the wings and body of the dragonfly well detailed. This robust example is in great condition - another Solnhofen "classic."
Overall Measurements: 7.9 x 7.4 x 0.8 inches (20.2 x 18.9 x 2.1 cm)
