Description
Fossil DragonflyAeschnogomphus intermedius
Jurassic
Solnhofen Limestone
Eichstätt, Germany
This Dragonfly fossil from out of the famed Solnhofen Lagerstätte of Germany is a top example of the variety and a "True Dragonfly" in the sense that is was carnivorous! The incredibly beautiful creature looks as if flying across its limestone matrix of light coloration. The winged prehistoric arthropod has evidence of minor "paint" on its expansive wings which are highly detailed and quite broad. The sets of two parallel appendages feature an overall light golden coloration with hints of reddish staining over the tips on one side related to a "wine" veining of color across the rock. An identifiable and iconic form makes the Dragonfly such a popular insect, and this superlative fossil exemplifies reasons why that is the case. Most importantly, this example represents a larger and rare variety of Dragonfly. For type, size and locality, this is one top tier specimen with exceptional preservation and appearance.
