Description

    Double Predatory Eurpyterid
    Acutiramus sp.
    Fiddlers Green Formation
    Silurian
    Herkimer County, New York, USA

Consistent with its appearance, this fossil is of a fierce predator that belonged to a family of Eurypterids known as Pterygotids which inhabited the ancient oceans some 425 million years ago. This unique form of the prehistoric "sea scorpion" represents the genus Acutiramus which had substantial "pincer" claws. The aquatic creatures had compound eyes and could grow up to 2 meters (2.2 feet) in length. The type was quite rare, and this "double" specimen is even more uncommon as it features a pair of Acutiramus, one of which exhibits an iconic "pincer" claw. The larger and more complete Eurypterid on this "block" has a missing section of tail which makes it look like two detached pieces. The secondary specimen has most of the upper body intact, although only one paddle is partially visible and still in place. The matrix is a mottled gray coloration with lots of texture including some brown "staining" near the upper corner. The grayish-brown fossils are muted but stand out in stark contrast to the background rock. The fossils do not exhibit much, if any, restoration, giving this unusual and uncommon plate a really rustic appeal.
