Description

CLASSIC TRILOBITE FROM PENNSYLVANIA - ODONTOCEPHALUS
Odontocephalus aegeria
Middle Devonian
Onodaga Limestone, Perry County, Pennsylvania
The Odontocephalus aegeria is a classic American trilobite that is found in the Devonian of the Appalachian region. While fragments and partial specimens are occasionally found in other states, the best specimens came from quarries in Perry County, Pennsylvania. All of these quarries have now been closed for decades and fine specimens can only be found in old collections. The present specimen is an excellent example of one of these classic trilobites, and also shows little of the distortion that happens to fossils in the Appalachian Mountains. The specimen has the classic cow-catcher structure on the cephalon and also has the unique double-spined tail. The trilobite is large in size for its species, measuring 3 7/8 inches long on a matrix measuring 8 x 5 inches.
