Description

CLASSIC AMERICAN TRILOBITE - PHACOPS RANA
    Phacops rana crassituberculata
    Devonian
    Silica shale, Sylvania, Ohio

The limestone quarries in Sylvania, Ohio, were popular collecting sites for fossil collectors; many finely preserved and occasionally pyritized fossils were found there. One of the rare, yet popular, fossils was the trilobite species Phacops rana. The Phacops rana species had special schizochroal eyes; large eye lenses with individual cornea that provided the trilobite with excellent vision. Sadly, the quarries have not allowed collecting for many years and fine specimens are only found in old collection. This specimen was beautifully prepared and features the amazingly well preserved eyes of the Phacops trilobites from the Sylvania site; the specimen is very well detailed and its only drawback are some missing portion on the left side of the cephalon. The trilobite measures 2 ½ x 1 ¼ on a pyrite-rich limestone matrix measuring 4 x 2 ½ inches.
