Description
"Sea Scorpion" Fossil PlateEurypterus remipes
Silurian
Fiddler Green Formation
Herkimer County, New York, USA
This unrivaled mass mortality plate is as big and good as they get. Featuring six complete examples of Eurypterus remipes, the massive rectangular brick has a metal band hanging system to facilitate wall installation. The surreal "sea scorpions" range in size from the longest at 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) from tip to tail, to the smallest at 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) on a straight-line measurement. In extremely good condition in terms of the preservation of the chitinous, exoskeletal remains, these creatures exhibit brownish coloration due to carbonization and natural polymerization of the organic matter of the fossilized organisms. The ancient arthropods featured pronounced paddle-like appendages, as well as multiple intricate spinose appendages, off the robust heads of the scavenging predators. This expansive plate came out of the iconic Fiddler Green Formation in Herkimer County, New York, dating to the Silurian Period, over 400 million years ago. Eurpyterus remipes was designated as the State Fossil of New York in 1984. The opposite "negative" side of this artistic assemblage currently resides in the R. A. Langheinrich Museum of Paleontology in Eastern Central New York - as a most fitting repository for such a quality representation of the treasured State Fossil of the Empire State. The undulating grayish matrix is slightly mottled, and there is a remnant partial head, in addition to the sextet of Eurypterids spread across a huge matrix measuring over 24 inches (61 cm) at its widest.
Overall Measurements: 24.61 x 14.17 x 1.18 inches (62.50 x 36.00 x 3.00 cm)
